At The North Way Studio, our clients are at the center of our craft, which means we consider everything - including any possible physical discomforts when wearing your piece of treasure. Several of our Wayfarers have reached out about possible modifications for their rings in the context of sensory sensitivities and phobias like trypophobia. The answer will always be: YES . We can modify existing designs specifically for these concerns.
For our Wayfarers who are curious about this topic, we've compiled essential information to guide you in choosing your (or your loved one's) perfect ring of gold.
Table of Content
Sensory Processing Disorder (SPD) refers to how a person's brain processes sensory information like sight, hearing, taste, smell, and touch. While SPD isn't a formal medical diagnosis, it's incredibly common among people with neurodevelopmental conditions, including autism spectrum disorder and ADHD. Research shows "about 5-15% of the general U.S. population experiences some form of sensory processing differences."
For jewelry wearers, sensory over-responsivity (SOR) is most relevant. This occurs when someone is overly sensitive to sensory input, which might manifest as:
Physical discomfort from certain metals against the skin
Sensitivity to texture variations on ring surfaces
Discomfort with weight or bulk
Aversion to specific tactile sensations
Beyond sensory sensitivities, certain phobias can also impact ring preferences. Trypophobia - which several of our Wayfarers have mentioned - deserves special attention.
Trypophobia is an aversion or repulsion toward patterns with clusters of holes, such as:
Honeycomb patterns
Sponge-like textures
Clustered gemstone settings
Repetitive small circular patterns
Rather than fear, trypophobia typically triggers feelings of disgust or discomfort. Studies suggest "approximately 16% of adults experience some degree of this response, making it more common than many people realize."
If you or your loved one experiences SPD or trypophobia, our newest addition, The Iseult Ring, could be your chosen one.
Iseult's timeless setting draws inspiration from antique collet collections, but its smooth, gilded gold surface serves a purpose beyond aesthetics. This ring was specifically molded and forged as a love letter to our Wayfarers who appreciate unmarked, clean beauty in their jewelry.
Key features that make Iseult sensitivity-friendly:
Completely smooth surfaces with no textural variations
Single stone setting avoiding cluster patterns
Streamlined profile for comfortable daily wear
Traditional elegance without triggering visual sensitivities
While Iseult stands out for its inherent wearability, our master goldsmith Maria is always ready to modify our heirloom ring settings for individual wearers. Common modifications include:
For Sensory Processing Sensitivities:
Eliminating raised leaf carvings or decorative elements
Adjusting ring weight and thickness
Modifying interior finishes for comfort
Selecting hypoallergenic metals
For Trypophobia Concerns:
Removing clustered diamond dewdrops
Replacing multiple small stones with single, larger gems
Simplifying pattern-heavy designs
Creating smooth alternatives to textured surfaces
We're currently creating a modified Belladonna en Trois without pattern-heavy features specifically for our sensitive Wayfarers.
The North Way Studio realm is open and safe for all lovers of beauty and gold. We're committed to creating personal heirlooms that are both stunning and completely wearable. Our raven posts are always open for Wayfarers who need special attention to their treasures.
